Lee and Homme’s
careers came to an end as Chesterton finished the season 6-7.
“Either you win to
play another day or you don’t at this time of the year,” Chesterton coach
Gretchen Shinn said. “This was tough.”
The Trojans held a
2-1 lead over Portage late in the afternoon with both the No. 1 singles and
No. 2 doubles matches coming down to the wire. Lee worked to rally back and
force a third set, but ultimately came up short in a match with Haupt that
featured two seniors battling to prolong their careers.
“We had a lot of
the same type of matches today,” Shinn said. “Portage played really well and
their girls never let up.”
As Lee and the rest
of her teammates watched, Haussman and Homme battled back from two different
deficits in the third set to force a tiebreaker. The Trojans jumped out to a
2-1 lead before the teams traded points back and forth until the tiebreaker
was at 5-5. Portage then scored the final two points of the match and will
face the winner of Thursday’s Valparaiso/Wheeler contest in the sectional
championship match on Friday.
Despite the loss in
the final match, Shinn took a positive approach to the outcome, especially
when it came to Homme.
“Megan is a senior
who didn’t have a lot of varsity experience coming into this year,” Shinn
said. “I’m really proud of the way she battled today and this season.”
sophomore Kathryn Ausema knocked off Sammie Thompson 6-0, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 3
singles and the junior No. 1 doubles team of Ellen Kerr and Natalie Petro
easily dispatched Lauren Wilk and Emily Vahary 6-4, 6-1.
“We only lose two
seniors from this season’s team,” Shinn said. “We’ll have a lot of seniors
and a lot of experience next year. We’ll continue to work hard.”
