CHS Girls Soccer wins Sectional opener

The Chesterton girls soccer team set up the game they were looking for.

The Trojans opened IHSAA Sectional play with a 4-0 victory over Portage on Tuesday night, setting up a date with the Valparaiso Vikings on Thursday.

“Portage did their best to frustrate us. But as a team we did a good enough job to get through,” Chesterton coach Ben Forgey said. “It sets up what will be a very good game on Thursday. Neither us, nor Valpo, have lost since we met very early this season. Both teams are confident and are playing well.

“I know the girls can't wait to play it. It should be fun.”

Caroline Liapes opened the Trojan scoring 25 minutes into the contest for a 1-0 lead.

“Caroline really loves to attack from left back,” Forgey said. “Tonight, that ability paid off again with her goal from distance. It was exactly what we needed.”

The lead grew to 2-0 when Ashlee Bakaitis scored just before halftime.

“Our pressure resulted in an Ashlee Bakaitis goal a few minutes before halftime,” Forgey said. “That was an important goal as it created a little more breathing room.”

The Trojans set the final score in the second half with goals from Grace O’Dell and another from Bakaitis.

“Tonight’s game was tough,” Forgey said. “We talked a bit at halftime and came out with the proper plan and attitude. We were in charge the entire time.”

Marney Sisson (2 saves) and Carley Balas combined in goal for the shutout.
