It was a small mission, but mission accomplished.

The Chesterton girls swim team positioned itself for an 11th consecutive Sectional title as they secured 10 top seeds for Saturday’s IHSAA Sectional Finals on Thursday night.

“As far as getting people in position, we did everything we needed to do,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “Prelims are hard to get up for, but the girls did a pretty good job. We had some great swims.

“Overall, I’m pretty pleased.”

While Chesterton’s top line kids coasted into the Finals, the depth of the Trojans’ was overwhelmingly evident.

“It was fun to watch a lot of our second and third kids drop a lot of time tonight,” Kinel said. “People like Kate Curley in the IM had a nice drop. Allison McAloon in the breaststroke had a huge drop. All our relays were solid. Jessie Campbell had two great swims today.”

Maddie Miller’s star shined as bright as anyone’s with personal bests in the 500 Free and the 100 Free. Both of her times were under the State Cut.

“We felt like her 500 was solid and her backstroke was where it should be coming in and she’s just went out and had a couple of terrific swims,” Kinel said. “Maddie’s a big meet swimmer. She really came on at the end of the year and she starting to do it again this year.”

The key for the Trojans pursuit of a State Title will come down to a few tenths of a second on Saturday.

“We have a lot of kids right around the State Cut,” Kinel said. “Those kids have to perform and make the Cut. We’ve got to win events and the kids should get to race each other and push each other.”

The Sectional Diving Meet is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday, while the Swimming portion of the meet will commence at 1 p.m. at Chesterton High School.
