The ball just didn’t go in enough.

The Chesterton girls basketball team controlled the tempo and did everything they could Friday night, but dropped a season-ending 29-24 decision to Michigan City in the opening round of the IHSAA Sectional at Merrillville.

“We got down and came back like we’ve done all year,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “We were right where we wanted to be. With their size, you really shouldn’t be in the game. Our girls did a great job of competing.”

The Trojans led 9-8 after one quarter, but fell behind 20-12 at the half.

“When City scores over 50 points they are 14-1,” Campbell said. “We wanted to limit possessions and make sure we took good shots.”

The Trojans hit on just 11-of-41 shots (27 percent) from the floor and were just 2-of-15 from 3-point range.

“We knew we weren’t going to score inside, so we wanted to get it in there and then kick it out,” Campbell said. “Or get Marney (Sisson) the ball at the foul line and give her room to shoot or drive to the basket. That’s just what we had to do and the ball didn’t go in enough.”

Sisson led the Trojans with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Nalani Malackowski and Emma Schmidt each tallied five points. Ashley Craycraft rounded out the scoring with two points.

“We finished 11-12 for the year and nobody thought we’d win 11 games,” Campbell said. “Five of the games, we lost were by three points or less. This group is one of the most competitive, give everything they have teams I’ve ever coached. Awesome year and a tough way to finish.”
