CHS Girls Hoops falls 56-50 in overtime

The Chesterton girls basketball team battled, but dropped a 56-60 Duneland Athletic Conference decision at Portage in overtime on Friday night.

Ashley Craycraft’s 3-pointer at the end of regulation tied the game and forced overtime at 46-46. Craycraft and Marney Sisson led the Trojans offensively with 15 points each.

Craycraft also scored the first basket of overtime, but Portage’s Kristin Cravens hit a triple to put the Indians ahead and they never trailed again.

Rounding out the scoring for Chesterton were Nalani Malackowski (7 points), Emma Schmidt (7 points), Molly Slatcoff (4 points) and Haley Moore (2 points).

Offensively, the Trojans struggled from the field as they hit just 17-of-61 shots (28 percent) from the floor and 4-of-16 (25 percent) from 3-point range.

CHS returns to the court on Friday when they host Valparaiso. The JV game is set for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.

Junior Varsity

Chesterton 27, Portage 25

The Chesterton junior varsity battled all the way back with a fourth quarter charge to beat Portage 27-25 on Friday night.

Trailing 20-16 after three quarters, the Trojans outscored the Indians 11-5 in the final stanza for the victory.

Offensively, Kaitlyn Carr led the way with five points, while Carley Balas, Mannat Singh, Hollie Skoczek and Tori Gehardt all added four points.

Rounding out the scoring were Emma Pape (2 points), Elizabeth Pokorney (2 points) and Sophia Raffin (1 point).
