The Chesterton girls golf team finished runner-up in the IHSAA Sectional at Valparaiso Country Club on Friday, advancing to Saturday’s IHSAA Regional at Battleground in Lafayette.

Valparaiso won the team title (365), followed by the Trojans (395), Portage (454), LaCrosse (460) and Merrillville (519).

“I’m very pleased with our overall performance as a team,” Chesterton coach Tommy Berry said. “We broke 400 again and on an extremely difficult course.”

Madison Simms and Katelyn McCoy both fired 90 to lead the Trojans.

“Madi and Katelyn both played well enough to be tied for the second lowest rounds of the day,” Berry said. “I’m really pleased at how Madi Battled through the round. She wasn’t striking the ball as well as she can, but she was mentally tough enough to grind it out for a solid score.

“Katelyn is right there as well. I’m confident in her ability to play well at Battleground.”

Paige House shot 105 for Chesterton and Zoe Swanson was the fourth counted score (110).

“Paige has really turned the corner and played extremely well for us down the stretch,” Berry said. “She really has improved throughout the season and stepped up for us again when one of her teammates was struggling.

“Zoe has been steady all year and put in another solid performance for us today.”

Addison Gentry rounded out the scoring (115).

“Although Addison struggled today, I know she’s a gamer and will be prepared next week at the Regional,” Berry said. “Even though she struggled, she still kept her composure and shot a very respectable score. I know she’ll bounce back next week at Battleground.”

Valparaiso’s Wynne Aldrich was medalist with a two-over-par 74.
