The red-hot Valparaiso Vikings were just too much.

The Vikings hit 11 of their first 14 shots, including 4-of-4 from 3-point range, and cruised to a 65-55 Duneland Athletic Conference victory on Friday night.

“It was everybody for them. It wasn’t just one person,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “They all got going at the same time. They had other kids step up tonight.”

Valparaiso built a 19-3 lead through the first half of the first quarter as only Sarah Dzierba’s 3-pointer put the Trojans on the scoreboard.

“We didn’t do a very good job of executing some things that we thought we could do against them,” Campbell said. “That’s my fault as coach. I thought we spent enough time on it during the week, but obviously, we didn’t.”

Hailey Vale was the lone bright spot for the Trojans with her 19 points and 11 rebounds. Courtney Krol added 10 points in the loss.

“You have to use the 6-foot kid you have inside. They tried to take some things away in there, but when she got it she was able to score.”

Chesterton held Valparaiso to just one third quarter basket, but the Vikings went to the foul line six times and the Trojans never made a run to get it any closer than 47-39.

“We told the girls to just stay with it,” Campbell said. “You want to say ‘they won’t continue to shoot that way’.”

Rounding out the scoring for the Trojans were Sarah Dzierba (9 points), Marney Sisson (7 points), Ashley Craycraft (6 points) and Maddie Scott (2 points).
