girls tennis team gave themselves a chance, but didn’t finish the deal, and
dropped a 4-1 decision to Valparaiso in the Semifinals of the IHSAA Tennis
Sectional on Wednesday.
“All season we
stressed the 3 E’s É effort, energy and enthusiasm,” Chesterton coach Tom
Bour said. “We didn’t fall shott on any of those tonight. As a coach that’s
all I can ask for.”
Hannah Nabhan was
the only Trojan to get a victory and moved on in the individual portion of
the State Tournament with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Alexis Orlich at No. 1
The Trojans had
chances in each of the other two singles matches as Ashley Fazekas won the
opening set from Julie Wappel 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Wappel would battle back
to win the final two sets 7-5, 7-5.
At No. 3, Paige
Donovan won the opening set from Claire Bartusch 6-1. Bartusch won the final
two sets 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).
“We were leading
the entire night in all three singles spots and to watch both No. 2 and No.
3 slip away in the end was tough to watch,” Bour said. “You have to give
Valpo so much credit for hanging in there and chipping away at us at No. 2
and No. 3 singles and then closing those matches in the third set.”
In doubles, Valpo
got victories at No. 1 from Emma Gilliana and Keeley Evans over Megan Hill
and Kara Maggio (6-3, 6-2) and from Natasha Mosher and A.K. Flude against
Taylor Nemtuda and Eliza Tumbas (7-5, 6-3) at No. 2.
“It just goes to
show you how difficult it is to maintain your focus throughout an entire
tennis match,” Bour said.
