The Chesterton High School football team just opened up a spot on its 2020 schedule with the ruling on Wednesday by the Illinois Governor J.B. Pishkur and the Illinois High School Association (IHSA).

“We’re looking through the options,” Chesterton High Athletic Director Jeff Hamstra said. “Right now, we don’t have a Week 2 opponent. Things are changing by the minute. We’re exploring every option.”

The IHSA postponed the football season due to continuing concerns with the coronavirus pandemic. The Trojans were scheduled to play St. Rita in Chicago on Aug. 28.

“I think it’s unfortunate to hear of the change in Illinois as it directly impacts us,” Chesterton head football coach Mark Peterson said. “It’s understandable and they are taking every precaution to keep the kids safe.

“I don’t know where we stand yet.”

The IHSA’s new plan is to have the football season from Feb. 15 to May 1. Girls volleyball and boys soccer will also be moved to that same time.

The only fall sports to be conducted will be boys and girls cross country, boys and girls golf, girls tennis and girls swimming. They are all scheduled to begin on Aug. 10 and end on Oct. 17.

Decisions about Illinois state tournaments will be made “on a sport-by-sport basis as each season progresses,” according to the IHSA’s news release.

Chesterton is scheduled to open the football regular season on Aug. 21 at home against Hobart.
