The Chesterton football team continued to battle, but didn’t get the desired result.

Crown Point broke open a 7-7 halftime game and picked up a 21-7 Duneland Athletic Conference decision over the Trojans on Friday night.

“We played well at times, but we lacked some consistency tonight,” Chesterton coach Mark Peterson said. “That can’t happen at this time of the year. We have to be able to play consistently on every play and put points on the board when we have a chance to.”

The Trojans took nearly 6:00 off the clock on the game’s first possession, but were stopped on downs near midfield.

Crown Point immediately took the ball 43 yards in nine plays resulting in a six-yard touchdown run from Tyler Gomez for a 7-0 lead.

“We were moving the ball fairly well at different times and we stopped ourselves,” Peterson said. “We have to get the ball in the end zone.”

The game remained that way until the final minute of the second quarter when Louie Razo capped off an eight-play, 34-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run. Harley Lohmeyer’s PAT tied the game.

“We thought there were some things we could attack on them and we did that,” Peterson said. “Unfortunately, it resulted mostly in yards and not points.”

Crown Point would get a pair of field goals from Ben Fidrich and a touchdown reception by Fidrich to set the final score after the break.

“Our defense hung tough,” Peterson said. “I’m really encouraged by the things we’re doing over there. They are really a mash unit right now.”

The Trojan offense struggled after the break to just 37 yards.

“That’s a good football team,” Peterson said. “Crown Point does some really nice things offensively and defensively.”

Chesterton also turned the ball over three times in the loss.

“Turnovers were crucial in inopportune times,” Peterson said.

The Trojans finish the regular season on Friday night when they head to Merrillville to take on the Pirates. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
