The Chesterton boys team isn’t afraid of Mother Nature

The Trojans outlasted 15 teams and posted a 308 team score to win the Michigan City Marquette Invitational at Michigan City Municipal on Saturday.

Valparaiso finished second (324), followed by LaLumiere (353), Lake Central (355) and Granger Christian (366) in the top five.

“With the conditions today and not knowing if we were even going to play, I think we played pretty well,” Chesterton coach Jordan Nelson said. “We have some really good players that battled through really tough conditions to shoot good scores. It was a pretty good start to the season.”

Mitch Davis took medalist honors with a one-over-par 73. Davis shot even par 36 on the back nine and tallied three birdies on the day.

Devin Trusty shot 75 with Sean Elliott (79), Cameron Schultz (81) and Jackson Roberts (90) rounding out the scoring.

“Mitch and Devin will lead the way if we are going to get where we want to go this year,” Nelson said. “We are definitely looking for Devin to continue to step up and do some big things. Sean breaking 80 in his first high school 18-hole tournament is great.

“If we can have our number three and four right around 80 or under, that’s what we’re looking for.”

The Trojans return to the course on Thursday when they host Munster at Sand Creek Country Club. Tee time is set for 4 p.m.
