Chesterton coach Mat Pavlovich knew his team was a little fatigued.

Pavlovich said he saw a little bit of that fatigue in some swims at Saturday’s Duneland Athletic Conference meet at the new and improved Valparaiso Aquatics Center, but as a whole there were no qualms as the Trojans rolled to their 24th straight DAC title.

Chesterton won 10 of 12 events, setting three DAC records in the process, scoring 526 points to runner-up Crown Point’s 411.5.

“We still had some really good swims for where we’re at right now,” Pavlovich said. “Looking back at last year’s times and comparing them, we’re at a good spot moving forward. It was a real positive meet for the kids. We set three DAC records against some of the names like (Blake) Pieroni, (Kyle) Whitaker, and (Gary) Kostbade.”

Trojans senior Andrew Alders set a career best in the 100-breast with a 56.03 and broke Gary Kostbade’s record of 56.41 set in 2017. Alders won the 100 freestyle in 46.26.

Alders was also on the record-setting 200 medley relay with Alejandro Kincaid, Connor Casbon and Lucas Piunti as the relay clocked a 1:33.22, edging the previous record of 1:33.66 from 2014. Alders, Carter Casbon, Gabe Kroeger and Gabriel Eschbach teamed up to win the 200-free relay in 1:27.04.

“That was my favorite swim, it felt really good and strong,” Alders said of his record-setting swim. “If you go your personal best here, that’s a really good indicator of where you’re at in the season, because you usually don’t hit those until about state. If you’re able to hit a personal best, that’s a good motivator and it’s huge for confidence.

“It’s a conference meet, it’s not the end-all. This sets you up for sectionals and sectionals sets you up for state. As a team, I thought we looked really good, came together and there were a lot of good swims out there. Everyone should walk away from this one really happy.”

Jordan Killosky was also a double-winner for the Trojans, winning the 200-free in 1:43.52 and the 500-free in 4:38.97. Eschbach was runner-up in both races.

“Coming into this meet, I was questioning my mentality a little bit, but I was able to reassure myself,” Killosky said. “Both swims felt great, actually. In these meets previously, I was kind of just going through them but this meet with the environment and the new pool had me hyped up and ready to swim.

“This time last year at DAC I think I went 4:49, so this was way better. I feel like our team is in a good place right now, too. Not only are our top guys improving, but our depth is getting really good.”

Eschbach was runner-up in both races.

“We’re really counting on those two,” Pavlovich said of Killosky and Eschbach. “They’re both swimming really well right now. If they can swim like this at sectionals and state, it’s gonna be a great thing for us to get some points.”

Piunti swam 1:52.19 to win the 200-individual medley, breaking Kyle Whitaker’s record of 1:52.43 that had stood since 2008. Piunti, Eschbach, Kroeger and Kincaid won the 400-free relay in 2:15.85.

Kincaid won the 100-back in 56.41 and Connor Casbon took first in the 100-fly with a 51.42 to round out the winners for the Trojans.

“I think we’re in a really good spot with Andrew and Lucas as well,” Pavlovich said. “I’m really excited to see what we can do. We have kids stepping up, too, like Beckham Mountford who was second in the 100-breast, that was a big swim for him.

“There’s the Highland dual meet Tuesday and then we’re done until sectionals, so it’s all about prepping for that and we’re getting excited and ready to go for that. We’re hoping we can get a couple sleeper kids to get a state cut at sectionals, that’d be great.”
