When you start a third decade of dominance, it may get repetitive, but not for the Chesterton boys swim team.

The Trojans posted 542 team points to win their 21st consecutive Duneland Athletic Conference crown on Saturday. LaPorte (301), Portage (293.5), Lake Central (286) and Crown Point (221.5) rounded out the top five.

“We get so sky high Thursday night for Munster that you always worry about a let down,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “The kids really performed today. It’s always fun to host this meet. Our whole conference really stepped up and had a fast meet. It had a Sectional atmosphere.”

The Trojans set four DAC Meet records, including individual ones by Gary Kostbade in the 100 Breaststroke (56.41) and Nick Hanas in the 500 Free (4:36.42).

“We had a good one today,” Kinel said. “We broke four DAC records and those are records from some pretty quality kids. Nick breaking his own record in the 500 and Gary getting the breaststroke record are just incredible swims.”

Kostbade would also earn DAC MVP honors.

“So deserving for Gary,” Kinel said. “He has 14 DAC titles and that deserves something. He was part of the national record team in the Medley Relay back in 2014. He’s paid his dues and has really helped us do a lot with his talent in the water and his leadership.”

The Trojans also set records in the 200 Free Relay (1:25.36) with the quartet of Wes Slaughter, Sam Kravitz, Declan Tharp and Gary Kostbade and the 400 Free Relay (3:09.29) with the group of Slaughter, Andrew Alders, Hanas and Tharp.

“Both Free Relays setting records is great and our Medley wasn’t far off it,” Kinel said. “We had some great swims. I’m proud of these guys.”

Other individual winners for the Trojans included Justin Wallar in the 200 Free (1:42.31), Nate Carlson in the 200 IM (1:55.54), Wes Slaughter in the 100 Free (47.76), Kostbade in the 100 Fly (50.70) and Danny Schmiegel (52.99) in the 100 Back.

“Wes had a big day today,” Kinel said. “Nate coming from behind to win the IM was terrific. Danny had a lifetime best swim to win the 100 Back. He’s really coming on and Justin Wallar is going crazy.

“Up and down the line we had great swims.”

The Trojans return to the pool on Tuesday when they host Highland beginning at 6 p.m.

“The biggest hurdle now is not getting too full of ourselves and putting things in perspective for the post-season,” Kinel said. “That’s where my mind is and everyone else’s will be too.”
