CHS Boys win 19th straight Swim Sectional title

Back To Front Page

As good as the Chesterton’s boys swim team was Saturday in claiming it’s 19th consecutive sectional title, coach Kevin Kinel knows they will need to be better at next weekend’s state finals in Indianapolis, and he thinks they will be.

The Trojans won all but one swimming event and finished atop the podium 10 times as they cruised to victory at the LaPorte Swimming and Diving Sectional. Chesterton finished with 540 points. Portage (333) was second, and LaPorte (307) was third.

“We’re going to the (IUPUI) Natatorium, and that pool is so much faster than this one, so we really feel like we’ve got our best coming,” Kinel said. “We had good swims up and down the line, we just need to be better next week, and I think we will.”

Chesterton qualified all nine individual swimmers and all three relays for the state finals. In addition to Chesterton’s seven individual winners, Justin Wallar (200-yard freestyle) and Danny Schmiegel (100 backstroke) surpassed the state cut times. A few Trojans were in position to be called down for the finals as well in spite of not meeting the state cut times Saturday.

“Our second guys that had a chance, for the most part, were at cut or close enough that I think they’ll get called,” Kinel said.

Gary Kostbade, Sam Kravitz and Nick Hanas each won two individual events for the Trojans.

Kostbade posted the top time in both the 100 butterfly (51.22 seconds) and 100 breaststroke (57.49 seconds).

Kravitz took both freestyle spring titles. He edged out LaPorte’s Jacob Cooper by 0.05 seconds (21.57) to win the 50 free, and he finished in front of teammate Wes Slaughter to win the 100 free (47.14).

Hanas took the top spot in both the 200 free (1 minute, 42.10 seconds) and 500 free (4:37.57). Hanas passed teammate Justin Wallar in the final 25 yards of the 200 to get the win.

“Nick did his job,” Kinel said. “He’s a big-meet swimmer.”

Wallar was second in both the 200 free and 500 free, and Ethan Wing was third in both events for the Trojans.

“Both of Justin’s swims were lifetime-bests, and for him to make that cut was really good, it was close,” Kinel said. “He had great swims.”

Nate Carlson posted the other individual win for the Trojans. He finished first in the 200 individual medley. He was also second in the 100 backstroke.

The Trojans took the top two places in six events.

“We’ve got a few kids who have to shave still, and we certainly could be better on the relays,” Kinel said. “We held back on exchanges some (Saturday). We’ve got some things to look forward to.”
