The weather almost held off Thursday night in Highland, but even a downpour to finish didn’t put a damper on the season-opener for the Chesterton boys track team.

“You always want to open with a win,” Chesterton coach John Snyder said. “With cold weather, you always wonder about pulling something or the times you may run. It was a good night.”

As expected the Trojans dominated the field events with 1-2-3 finishes in the shot put, high jump and pole vault.

In the shot put, Dan Dellumo took top honors with a throw of 54-8, while Nathan Brock (47-3 1) and Sean Matheny (39-7) followed.

“Shot put with Nathan Brock going 47-3 for a PR is just going to push us to score even more points,” Snyder said. “Dan Dellumo continues to get more and more consistent. They keep this up and we can score in the big meet’s too.”

In the high jump, Kody Galloway cleared 6-6 for first place with Sam Lindquist (6-0) and Donnie Johnson (5-10) rounding out the top three.

“I was pleasantly surprised by our high jumpers,” Snyder said. “To go out and go 6-6, 6-0 and 5-10 on opening night in this weather is really good. That’s something we can really build on.”

Justin Zosso won the pole vault at 12-0, while Peter Fouts was second also at 12-0.

“It’s really going to come down to those second and third guys for us this season,” Snyder said. “When I start seeing these types of things, I get excited about what we can do.”

On the track, Andrew Kearney won the 1600 (4:48) and 3200 (10:39) with Richie Ruff winning the 100 hurdles (16.06) and the 300 hurdles (43.45).

Other individual winners included Jon Watson in the 400 (51.30) and Manny Orlich in the 800 (2:08.80).
