The Chesterton boys
tennis team won the eight-team Portage Tournament on Saturday.
The Trojans amassed
42 points to win the title, followed by South Bend St. Joe (35), Highland
(33), Centerville (29), Merrillville (23), Portage (22), Bethany Christian
(16) and Triton (5).
“Anytime we win a
big tournament like this it is so rewarding because it needs to be a total
team effort,” Chesterton coach Tom Bour said. “Everyone contributed to this
title. I love how we’re playing right now as the post-season approaches.”
champions for the Trojans included Nick Hanson at No. 2 singles with a 3-0
record including victories over Bethany Christian (6-0, 6-0), Centerville
(6-4, 6-2) and Merrillville (6-3, 3-6, 20-7).
The No. 1 doubles
team of Blake Ellenwood and Chad Whelan won their flight with three
victories over Triton (6-0, 6-1), Bethany Christian (6-1, 6-0) and South
Bend St. Joe (6-1, 6-4), while the No. 2 duo of Paul Petro and Luke Liapes
were also 3-0 with wins over South Bend St. Joe (6-1, 6-2), Centerville
(6-0, 6-3) and Highland (6-1, 6-7, 8-6).
At No. 1 singles,
Matt Jewison finished third with a pair of wins over Merrillville (6-0, 6-0)
and Portage (6-0, 6-0).
At No. 3 singles,
the duo of Azeez Lakhani and James Navarro combined to finish fifth. Lakhani
beat Triton (6-2, 7-5), while Navarro beat Bethany Christian 6-1, 6-4).
The Trojans return
to the court tonight when they host Lowell beginning at 4:15 p.m.
