The Chesterton boys
tennis team took control early and cruised to its fourth straight IHSAA
Sectional title with a 5-0 victory over Portage on Thursday night.
“Winning our fourth
consecutive Sectional is a tribute to the players buying into what it means
to play for Chesterton and working hard to keep the program trending
forward,” Trojan coach Tom Bour said. “The support we get from the school,
the player’s families and the community is great. It gives the boys more
motivation to keep this program growing and succeeding.”
The Trojans cruised
to victories in singles led by Matt Jewison improving to 17-6 overall with a
6-1, 6-2 win over Zach Gertzen at No. 1 and Nick Hanson beating Bryce
Kissinger 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2.
completed the singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Mickey Winicky at No.
“Today’s match was
all set up for us to have a letdown mentally after such a big win Tuesday
over Valparaiso,” Bour said. “To the boys’ credit, they got off the bus just
as focused and determined to play great today. I’m proud of how we kept our
cool and stayed intense and focused throughout the match.”
In doubles, Blake
Ellenwood and Chad Whelan beat Evan Gerike and Alexander Bourge 6-3, 6-0 at
No. 1, while Paul Petro and Luke Liapes beat Ronald Wilkins/Bryan Garrison
6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.
