The Chesterton boys tennis team took control early and cruised to its fourth straight IHSAA Sectional title with a 5-0 victory over Portage on Thursday night.

“Winning our fourth consecutive Sectional is a tribute to the players buying into what it means to play for Chesterton and working hard to keep the program trending forward,” Trojan coach Tom Bour said. “The support we get from the school, the player’s families and the community is great. It gives the boys more motivation to keep this program growing and succeeding.”

The Trojans cruised to victories in singles led by Matt Jewison improving to 17-6 overall with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Zach Gertzen at No. 1 and Nick Hanson beating Bryce Kissinger 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2.

Corydon Gaff completed the singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Mickey Winicky at No. 3.

“Today’s match was all set up for us to have a letdown mentally after such a big win Tuesday over Valparaiso,” Bour said. “To the boys’ credit, they got off the bus just as focused and determined to play great today. I’m proud of how we kept our cool and stayed intense and focused throughout the match.”

In doubles, Blake Ellenwood and Chad Whelan beat Evan Gerike and Alexander Bourge 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1, while Paul Petro and Luke Liapes beat Ronald Wilkins/Bryan Garrison 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.

“It was nice to see No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles play so well after dropping their matches on Tuesday,” Bour said. “We can only hope their level of play continues into the Regional.”

The Trojans will face Penn on Tuesday in the IHSAA Portage Regional beginning at 4:15 p.m.
