The Chesterton boys
tennis team continued to roll.
The Trojans battled
and battled and finally came away with a 3-2 victory in the IHSAA Sectional
Finals victory over Valparaiso on Thursday at Portage.
“To win a fifth
Sectional in a row against such a great program like Valpo, is a lot to be
proud of,” Chesterton coach Tom Bour said. “I’m happy for the boys and they
deserve so much credit for believing in themselves.”
The Trojans first
team point came at No. 2 singles as Corydon Gaff beat Spencer Ross 6-1, 6-3.
Then things got hairy.
Chad Whelan and
Nick Hanson dropped the first set at No. 1 doubles to Will Behrend and
Calvin McMurtrey 6-3. The duo battled back to win the final two sets 6-4,
6-2 and clinch the team’s second point.
“Our pre-match talk
was simple tonight,” Bour said. “I told them to not go out and play for CHS,
not to play for their families and not for Coach Matt (Adams) or me. Go play

After winning the
opening set 6-3, they dropped the second set 7-5 and were down 2-0 in the
third set. The duo went on to win six of the next eight games and clinch the

The Trojans will
face off against New Prairie on Tuesday in the semifinals of the IHSAA
LaPorte Regional. South Bend St. Joe and Penn will match-up in the other
