The Chesterton boys tennis team continued to roll.

The Trojans battled and battled and finally came away with a 3-2 victory in the IHSAA Sectional Finals victory over Valparaiso on Thursday at Portage.

To win a fifth Sectional in a row against such a great program like Valpo, is a lot to be proud of, Chesterton coach Tom Bour said. Im happy for the boys and they deserve so much credit for believing in themselves.

The Trojans first team point came at No. 2 singles as Corydon Gaff beat Spencer Ross 6-1, 6-3. Then things got hairy.

Chad Whelan and Nick Hanson dropped the first set at No. 1 doubles to Will Behrend and Calvin McMurtrey 6-3. The duo battled back to win the final two sets 6-4, 6-2 and clinch the teams second point.

Our pre-match talk was simple tonight, Bour said. I told them to not go out and play for CHS, not to play for their families and not for Coach Matt (Adams) or me. Go play for yourself.

At No. 2 doubles, Drew Engels and James Navarro did just that.

After winning the opening set 6-3, they dropped the second set 7-5 and were down 2-0 in the third set. The duo went on to win six of the next eight games and clinch the title.

We talked about whether we win or lose, our efforts tonight better be something were proud of, Bour said.

The Trojans will face off against New Prairie on Tuesday in the semifinals of the IHSAA LaPorte Regional. South Bend St. Joe and Penn will match-up in the other semifinal.
