Two decades of dominance.

The Chesterton boys swim team won its 20th consecutive Duneland Athletic Conference title on Saturday at LaPorte.

The Trojans amassed 512 points to outdistance second place Valparaiso (333). Crown Point was third (312), followed by LaPorte (226), Lake Central (225), Michigan City (211.5), Portage (174.5) and Merrillville (87).

“It was our first taste of Championship season, so you have to feel good about it,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “It’s cool to think this has gone on for two decades. You have to reflect on that a little. The kids really stepped up. We had a lot of good times.”

Double individual winners included Gary Kostbade in the 200 IM (1:54.04) and the 100 Fly (50.99) and Nick Hanas in the 200 Free (1:45.00) and the 500 Free (4:39.61).

Hanas’ time in the 500 Free set a new DAC record.

“Our front runners did what they needed to do and our depth came through,” Kinel said. “Gary did his thing and had two season-best swims. Nick getting the DAC record was icing on the cake. He’s really coming into his own.”

Other individual event winners were Wes Slaughter in the 50 Free (22.00) and Sam Kravitz in the 100 Free (47.53).

“Wes (Slaughter) and Sam (Kravitz) each had a great meet,” Kinel said. “They both came through with two season-best swims.”

The Trojans also won all three relays beginning with the 200 Medley from the group of Slaughter, Kostbade, Wes Selking and Kravitz (1:36.53).

The 200 Free Relay quartet of Kravitz, Chris Kaptur, Declan Tharp and Kostbade won 1:27.56, while the 400 Free Relay of Slaughter, Kaptur, Tharp and Hanas won in 3:13.30.

“The rest of the conference swam well today too and that helped us in some races,” Kinel said. “We have our work cut out for us the rest of the post-season. There is a lot left in the tank for us.”

Second place finishers were Slaughter in the 100 Free (48.26) and Andrew Gillen in the 100 Breaststroke (1:01.90).

Third place points scorers were Justin Wallar (200 Free), Nathan Carlson (200 IM), Kravitz (50 Free) and Danny Schmiegel (100 Back).

“It really was a team effort,” Kinel said. “Justin Wallar and Chad Schuster were incredible twice. Nathan Carlson had two lifetime best swims. Wes Selking has been sick and had a terrific meet. Andrew Carlson went 4:55 in the 500 which is incredible. Danny Schmiegel had two lifetime best swims and Noah Van Nevel was great in the backstroke.”
