The streak is alive.

The Chesterton boys swimming and diving team racked up its 19th consecutive Duneland Athletic Conference title by amassing 514 points Saturday at Crown Point.

Lake Central finished second with 330, followed by Crown Point (296) and Valparaiso (281).

“Getting No. 19 is pretty cool,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “We were joking afterwards as a staff that this streak started before any of the kids were even born. We’ve done a pretty good job of making people understand that tradition is important.”

Gary Kostbade was the lone double individual event winner for the Trojans with victories in the 200 IM (1:56.95) and the 100 Fly (51.77).

“Gary had a good meet,” Kinel said. “As good as we swam against Munster, there is always the risk of a letdown coming into this. The whole DAC swam well and that really elevated us as well. It was one of those days where they were really ready to go.”

Other individual winners for the Trojans included Josh Van Nevel in the 500 Free (4:46.40) and Andrew Gillen in the 100 Breast (1:00.68).

“Josh won the 500 Free going away and looked great in the Fly,” Kinel said. “He’s way ahead of where he was last year. Andrew Gillen and the rest of the breaststroke guys were really good today too.”

Chesterton also took titles in all three relays with the group of Wesley Slaughter, Kostbade, Wesley Selking and Chris Kaptur winning the 200 Medley Relay in 1:37.17, while the quartet of Kaptur, Selking, Sam Kravitz and Kostbade won the 200 Free Relay in 1:28.00.

In the 400 Free Relay, the group of Kravitz, Van Nevel, Chad Schuster and Slaughter won in 3:15.41.

“All three relays really stepped up,” Kinel said. “The Medley and 200 Free were really challenged. It was nice to see those guys come through like that.”

Slaughter turned in a pair of runner-up performances in the 200 Free and 100 Back, while Kaptur was second in the 50 Free. Van Nevel was second in the 100 Fly with Kravitz (100 Free) and Nick Hanas (500 Free) also scoring runner-up points.

“Our 200 Free guys were great and the 50 guys were solid,” Kinel said. “I could go right down the lineup with guys who swam great. We had some season bests and some career bests.”

Winning seven of 12 events doesn’t usually lead to 200+ point victories, but the Trojans’ depth is becoming dominant.

“It’s fun to see so many of these kids up from our JV lineup last year,” Kinel said. “Some of these kids could have been part of it last year, but we were so strong they never got a chance.”

Kinel was quick to point out the performances of Slaughter, Logan Bell, Wes Selking and Chad Schuster.

“You lose 14 quality studs like we did last year and these guys are finding their own path,” Kinel said. “They keep rising to the occasion. It’s a testament to the program and to the kids.”

The Trojans return to the pool on Tuesday when they host Highland, but their attention is beginning to turn to the post-season.

“We’re happy to keep everything alive and we have such great support from the community and school,” Kinel said. “We felt like today we got an idea of what we might be able to accomplish at the end. We still have some work to do, but it was a nice indicator of just where we are.”
