CHS Boys Swim team keeps Conference Championship streak alive

Chesterton’s boys swimming continued the program’s tradition of excellence, winning their 23rd straight Duneland Athletic Conference title.

The Trojans won 7-of-12 events, placing second and/or third in the ones it didn’t win, in racking up 513 points at Lake Central on Saturday. The host Indians totaled 387.50 with Crown Point in third at 336.

“We had a good day,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “Our kids did step up and we’ll have some big decisions to make going into the postseason. There were a lot of close races with some going our way, and some not and hopefully it was a learning experience for everyone.

“I also wanna give kudos to our assistant Pat Ward who took the lead here (Saturday) with me feeling under the weather.”

The Trojans set two records on the day, both in the relays. The 200 free relay team of Andrew Alders, Ethan Wing, Declan Tharp and Gabe Kroeger set a pool record clocking in at 1:25.46. To cap the day, the 400 free relay of Wing, Kroeger, Alders and Lucas Piunti set pool and DAC records with a time of 3:07.52.

“Conference records are really fast so it’s not the easiest to get those,” Kinel said. “I think we flirted with a few of them and that was really saying something because a lot of those records are from some of our powerful teams.”

Alders was a dual-winner for the Trojans winning the 200 freestyle in 1:40.28 and the 100 butterfly in 49.92.

“I feel really well about today,” he said. “Honestly, I was a lot faster than I thought I would be in both events. I’m definitely faster than I was last year at this point.”

He was particularly hyped up about the team’s relay performances.

“We were fired up before the meet to maybe get some records,” Alders said. “Once we knew what the records were, we really got after it. The atmosphere in here was so loud today and you can really feed off of that.”

In addition to the 400 free relay, Piunti swam a leg of the first-place 200 medley relay with Tharp Connor Casbon and Danny Schmiegel, who won the 100 breast (59.99).

Piunti won the 200 IM in 1:53.31, with Tharp and fellow Trojan Alejandro Kincaid in the next two places. Piunti was runner-up in the 100-back, edged by four-hundredths of a second by Michigan City’s Jack Smith.

“I would have liked to have been quicker in the IM, but it was still a solid swim,” Piunti said. “Comparing to last year at DAC, I’m three seconds faster in the IM and two faster in the back. I’m pretty happy with where I’m at right now.

“I got a lot of things to work on still, like I know I can hit my turns quicker, in the backstroke especially. I messed up the finish on my backstroke and that probably cost me.”

The Trojans have one regular season meet left against Highland. They’ll then begin prep for sectionals at Chesterton with prelims on Feb. 14 and finals on the 16th.

“If I look at where we were at the beginning of the year with taking the graduating seniors out all the way to now, I think we’ve really gone forward,” Kinel said.
