CHS Boys Soccer starts season with shutout win

Game one in the books.

The Chesterton boys soccer team opened the 2013 season with an impressive 6-0 victory over Boone Grove on Monday night.

“Always good to get the first one out of the way,” Chesterton coach Jamie Sensibaugh said. “We had some young kids, so they got a chance to work out the jitters a little bit.”

The Trojans took little time in scoring as Jason Garmany found the back of the net on a pass from Trent Weller less than six minutes into the game. Weller dished out three assists in the win.

“We found our target player, Trent Weller, with his back to the goal and got the one touch into space behind the defense,” Sensibaugh said. “He played a great game up top.”

The Trojans added back-to-back goals from John Ward and another by Billy Biehl as the first half domination continued to a 4-0 lead at the break.

“This is a game of possession and if you have more than the other team, it’s a good thing,” Sensibaugh said. “What I like the most is we were getting good opportunities on through balls in the right spots. Those are going to come along and lead to goals.”

Travis Brooks scored to start the second half and Biehl scored again to set the final score. Caleb Gmyrek recorded five saves in the shutout victory.

“Caleb played really well in the first half,” Sensibaugh said. “We’ll be susceptible to some things with the way we play and he can erase them. We’ll give up some goals with some breakdowns occasionally, but to have more punch up top that can happen.”
