CHS Boys Soccer blasts Valpo 4-0

Back To Front Page

It didn’t take long.

The Chesterton boys soccer team scored just 1:05 into the game Wednesday night on its way to a 4-0 Duneland Athletic Conference shutout victory over Valparaiso.

“We had a rough first half,” Chesterton coach Lucas Sabedra said. “We weren’t connecting on passes like we should have. We were worried about them scoring instead of worrying about how we play.”

Nathan Arthur found Seth Conway in stride through the Viking defense and the junior forward beat Valpo keeper Jubal Harmon for a 1-0 lead.

“Seth is really good at making himself available,” Sabedra said. “He’s really creative. He’s not selfish except when he needs to be. He has such an attacking mindset and he’s such a team player.

“He’s a player everyone wants to have and nobody likes to play against.”

Conway would find the head of Jack Eaton with 3:56 to play to push the score to 2-0 at halftime. Chesterton had a final chance to score in the first half, but a penalty kick missed wide right.

““We do a good job getting numbers up,” Sabedra said. “Something we focus on is pressing high with our back line. The biggest thing is we want everyone on the field involved around the ball.”

It didn’t take long after the break to keep the onslaught going as Conway was taken down in the box for another penalty kick. This time, Nick Biel scored inside the right post for a 3-0 lead.

The final touches came less than two minutes later when Zach Bowser took a long pass from Jordan Carlson and score the game’s final tally.

“Jordan is great at playing dime balls from 40 yards out,” Sabedra said. “That’s the second goal we’ve had like that this year.”

The Trojans fired 14 shots on goal during the contest, while Chesterton keeper Charlie Eaton was forced to make just three saves.

“Jack (Eaton) and Jordan (Carlson) do a good job of keeping us organized in the back,” Sabedra said. “The main thing is to always have an extra guy in the back to keep people covered.”

CHS returns to the field on Saturday when they travel to South Bend to take on St. Joe. The JV game is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start.
