Marc Urban was welcomed back. His team made sure they came with him.

The Chesterton boys basketball team hit its first nine shots from the field and raced out to a 17-4 lead and picked up a 60-53 Duneland Athletic Conference victory at Lake Central on Friday night.

“We got off to a hot start,” the second-year Chesterton head coach said. “Our guys were ready to go. We got the ball moving quick and knocked some shots down.

“We got good looks and when it was their turn to right the bell, they rang it.”

For Urban, greeted by the LC student body with a sign and two fatheads, it was his first visit back to LC since taking the Trojans job last year. Urban graduated from LC in 2001 and was a boys basketball assistant coach for six years before becoming the girls head coach for four seasons.

He coached the first varsity basketball game in the new LC gym three years ago.

“There are great people at Lake Central and at Chesterton,” Urban said. “I’m very lucky to have been at two great places, but it’s obviously different coming back here for a game. Once the game started, it was just like any other game.”

The Trojan lead grew to 26-9 In the second quarter after baskets by Noah Mahoney and Tyler Nelson, but the Indians went on a 17-4 run to finish the half and draw within 30-26.

“In the second quarter, we gave up some rebound baskets and, with our size, we have to rebound for 32 minutes,” Urban said. “We gave them a good punch early and they came back like we knew they would.”

LC continued the run with a pair of baskets to start the third quarter and tied the game at 30 before Austin Peterson and Mahoney scored back-to-back baskets and the game was never tied again.

“I was really proud of our guys after they made the comeback to stick with it in a great environment like this,” Urban said. “We found a way to grind it out and make some plays when we needed to.”

Ky Palombizio’s basket to end the third quarter extended the lead to 44-39. Palombizio scored five more points on his way to a game-high 18 early in the fourth period to push the lead to 50-41.

The game never got closer than six points after that.

“We keep growing up as a basketball team,” Urban said. “We keep getting better and that’s a good sign.”

Peterson finished with 14 points and Jake Wadding added 11 points.

Rounding out the scoring were Nelson (7 points), Mahoney (4 points), Kolton Cardenas (4 points) and Jack Eaton (2 points).

The Trojans hit on 24-of-39 shots (62 percent) from the field, outrebounded LC 23-19 and were 8-of-11 from the foul line.
