The Chesterton boys basketball team scored early and often as they cruised to a season-opening 81-53 victory at Gary Lighthouse Prep Academy on Saturday night.

“It was good to get a win on the road against a team that is relentless in what they do,” Chesterton coach Marc Urban said. “I thought our guys did a nice job of making basketball plays.”

The Trojans jumped out to a 25-9 lead after one quarter behind nine points from Jake Wadding and eight from Ky Palombizio.

The lead grew to 43-22 at halftime and the Trojans were never challenged again.

Wadding led Chesterton with 17 points as Palombizio (13 points), Tyler Nelson (12 points) and Kolton Cardenas (10 points) joined him in double figures.

Rounding out the scoring were Harley Lohmeyer (8 points), Josh Matthews (6 points), Austin Peterson (6 points), Noah Mahoney (5 points), Nick Mullen (2 points), Jack Eaton (1 point) and Drew Vanderwoude (1 point).

Peterson led the charge on the backboard with 11 rebounds and Wadding grabbed 10 boards.

“We have to clean up some of our turnovers and offensive rebounding, but it was a nice start to the season,” Urban said.

The Trojans return to the court on Wednesday when they travel to Hammond Morton. The junior varsity game is set for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
