They say the first one is the hardest.

First year Chesterton boys basketball coach Marc Urban didn’t waste any time in picking up his first win as the Trojans got a season-opening 54-34 victory at Gary West Side on Tuesday.

“It was a good win on the road,” Urban said. “It’s nice to get the first game out of the way.”

The Trojans’ defense dominated the first half as they built a 24-8 halftime lead.

“We got off to a good start,” Urban said. “We moved the ball well and hit some shots. We took three charges on defense. Our help-side defense and rotations were really good against an athletic team like that.”

Austin Peterson led the Chesterton offense with 14 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Ky Palombizio added nine points on three triples.

Rounding out the scoring were Ray Yagleski (8 points), Jake Wadding (7 points), Erik Ralph (6 points), Noah Mahoney (4 points), Jack Eaton (2 points), Tony Gilyan (2 points) and Brayden Cortwright (2 points).

“I think we had some turnovers that we need to clean-up and we need to finish better around the rim,” Urban said. “If we do that, add 10-15 points to the offensive total.”

Chesterton returns to the court on Saturday night when they face Gary Lighthouse Academy. The junior varsity is set for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
