CHS Boys Hoops drops regular season finale

Chesterton coach Marc Urban and the Trojans don’t have much time to dwell on Friday night’s 49-47 loss at West Side.

After closing the regular season with that narrow defeat against the Cougars, the Trojans open Sectionals Tuesday night against Portage.

“We have to move on from this pretty quickly,” Urban said. “We have two days to get ready for Portage -- that’s going to be a difficult game at their place.

“We’re going to have to get really, really tough really, really quickly.”

Before playing Portage (10-14), a team Chesterton beat 70-39 at home on Feb. 8, the Trojans (16-6) ended the regular season on a down note against West Side (15-7).

Senior forward Jimmie Washington hit the go-ahead 3-pointer for the Cougars with 5.1 seconds left.

“It was emotional because it was my senior night,” Washington said. “It was a great team win. It was a great way to cap off my senior night.”

After the Trojans called a timeout, junior forward Jake Wadding was whistled for a charge with 0.5 seconds left, with Parion Roberson drawing it.

“You put the ball in the best player’s hands -- he was able to get pretty deep there,” Urban said. “The guy slid over and took a charge and made a big play.”

Washington missed a free throw with 0.4 seconds left and Wadding’s full-court heave fell short as time expired, with the Cougars ending a three-game losing streak to the Trojans since 2015-16.

Chesterton led by as much as 25-12 with 2:12 left in the first half on a basket by Wadding, who had a team-high 14 points.

But West Side came back, taking a 35-33 lead on Jalen Washington’s inside basket with seven seconds left in the third quarter and making it 38-33 on the freshman forward’s 3-pointer with 7:36 left.

Kolton Cardenas tied the score at 44-44 for the Trojans with a 3-pointer with 2:36 left and the senior guard made two free throws to give them a 46-44 edge with 1:47 left.

Wadding’s free throw made it 47-46, but Paris Roberson came up with a steal and layup for West Side with 37.2 seconds left to make it a one-point game. The Cougars forced another Trojans turnover with 28.8 seconds left, leading to Jimmie Washington’s decisive 3-pointer.

The tide turned in the third quarter, when West Side outscored Chesterton 19-8.

“They caught fire in the third quarter,” Urban said. “I didn’t feel we did a terrible job guarding. They just hit some tough shots.

“They got it even and then it was back and forth.”
