CHS Boys Hoops blows out Lowell 89-61

Back To Front Page

The Chesterton boys basketball team has passed all its early season tests.

The Trojans took apart one of the area’s top teams in an 89-61 victory over Lowell on Saturday night to improve to 4-0 on the season.

“We played well,” Chesterton coach Marc Urban said. “We got some good looks and hit some shots early.”

The Trojans built a 24-16 lead after one quarter as they were able to break the Red Devils’ trapping defense.

“They mix up their defenses with different traps,” Urban said. “We found the open man and were patient against it. We only had 14 turnovers and that’s a good number for us.”

Leading 40-32 at the half, the Trojans turned in another solid second half and pushed the lead to 65-47 after three quarters.

“In the second half we kept making stops,” Urban said. “It was mainly just a matter of doing the things we did in the first half. We have things we still have to get better at though.”

The Trojans finished the rout by hitting 9-of-11 free throws in the final stanza to set the final score.

“The kids are buying in and it shows that if we play together we can be good,” Urban said. “Now that we’ve won a little bit and people are noticing it, will we still keep doing the little things.”

Austin Peterson led the Trojans with 26 points, including three 3-pointers, while Ray Yagelski added 17 points.

“Pete played really well and hit some big 3’s,” Urban said. “Ray guarded (Nick) Mantis the whole second half and did a really good job against him. We helped him a little, but he did the job himself.”

All five starters for Chesterton scored double figures including Erik Ralph (13 points), Jake Wadding (11 points) and Ky Palombizio (10 points).

The Trojans return to the floor on Tuesday when they travel to Bowman Academy. The junior varsity contest is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
