The Chesterton boys basketball team turned up the defensive pressure in the second half and cruised to a 66-35 non-conference victory at Boone Grove Wednesday night.

“I thought the key was our defense in the second half,” Chesterton coach Tom Peller said. “We made some adjustments and they didn’t get easy baskets. Some positioning changes made a big difference.”

Cole Teal knocked down a 3-pointer to start the third quarter that pushed the Chesterton lead to 32-22 and a 10-2 run midway through the third quarter put the game out of reach.

“We pressured the ball, but put our help side defensively in the lane and took away their ability to drive,” Peller said.

After building an 8-3 lead in the first two minutes, the Trojans struggled against Boone Grove’s patient, backdoor offense in the first half.

“They did a good job of taking care of the ball and our aggressive man-to-man defense left them some driving lanes,” Peller said.

Teal and Chris Palombizio led the Chesterton offense with 15 points each, while Donnie Johnson added 10 points.

“We shared the ball well, got the ball inside and took good shots,” Peller said.

The Trojans hit on 20-of-51 shots (39 percent) from the floor, while holding the Wolves to just 12-of-38 (32 percent) shooting. Boone Grove hit just 3-of-17 shots (18 percent) from the field in the second half.

Chesterton finishes off the regular season on Friday night when they travel to Crown Point to take on the Bulldogs. The junior varsity game is set for 6 p.m.

“It’s an important game in a lot of ways,” Peller said. “We want to go into the tournament with some momentum and playing well.”
