CHS Boys beat Valpo in Sectional opener

When a group of seniors make a decision, it sticks.

Cole Teal scored 23 points and his classmates dominated the defensive end of the court as the Chesterton boys basketball team beat Valparaiso 45-37 in the opening round of the IHSAA Sectional Wednesday night.

“Cole Teal was the difference in the game,” Chesterton coach Tom Peller said. “He willed us to win this game tonight. His offensive play and leadership were exceptional.”

After Valparaiso scored the game’s first four points, Teal got going as he tallied the first seven Chesterton points to tie the score midway through the first quarter.

“We have to control the tempo and take good shots,” Peller said. “For the most part, I thought we did that. This is the type of game we have to play right now. With fewer possessions, we have to make sure we get the shots we want.”

That included triples by seniors Corey Rusboldt and Brandon Roeske for a 13-9 Trojan lead after one period of play.

After leading 19-16 at the halftime break, Teal scored all 10 Trojan points in the third quarter as the lead grew to 29-23.

Chesterton hit 12 free throws in the final quarter to set the final score.

“We didn’t make as many as we should’ve to close the door,” Peller said. “But we did enough to get to the next round.”

Defensively, the Trojans held Valparaiso to 13-of-39 shooting (33 percent) from the floor and 4-of-19 shooting (21 percent) from 3-point range.

“I thought Andrew Ralph’s defense on (Justin) Osburn was great,” Peller said. “He held him to one basket and that’s their go-to guy. We just got after people defensively. It’s nothing special. We’re just locked in and focused.

“We said to win the Sectional we have to be the best defensive team here.”

The Trojans will face LaPorte in the Semifinals Friday night at Valparaiso. The tip is scheduled for approximately 7:30 p.m.
