CHS Boys beat Valpo for Duneland Conference basketball championship

Marc Urban’s program keeps breaking streaks.

One year after winning the first Sectional since 1987, the Chesterton boys basketball team picked up its first outright Duneland Athletic Conference title since 2008 with a 54-51 victory over Valparaiso on Friday night.

“This is only the third time we’ve won the DAC (at CHS),” Urban said. “Everyone goes into the year wanting to win it, and to our guys’ credit, we got the job done.”

The Trojans appeared in control after an 8-0 run that put them on top 46-39 early in the third quarter, but back-to-back three’s from the Vikings led to an 8-2 run and a 48-47 Chesterton lead.

“That was a great game,” Urban said. “I was proud of our guys for sticking with it and making plays when we needed to.”

Nobody made a bigger play than Charlie Eaton as he knocked down an open triple with 2:31 left that put the Trojans on top 52-47.

“It was a big shot,” Urban said. “He stepped in and shot the ball with confidence and that’s what you have to do. Charlie is a kid that just knows how to win. He got gritty and found ways to make plays.”

Valpo got within 52-51, but Jake Wadding iced the game with two free throws with 12.9 seconds to go that set the final score.

Wadding finished with a game-high 21 points, while Travis Grayson added 15 points.

Rounding out the scoring for Chesterton were Jake Warren (8 points), Alex Schmidt (3 points), Eaton (3 points), Sean Elliott (2 points) and Tyler Vanderwoude (2 points).

The Trojans will finish the regular season on Friday night when they host Gary West Side. The JV game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
