The Chesterton boys basketball team have set themselves up.

The Trojans improved to 5-1 in Duneland Athletic Conference play and set up Friday night’s showdown at Valparaiso with a 70-39 victory over Portage on Friday.

“I thought defensively we did a really good job of guarding them,” Chesterton coach Marc Urban said. “They had a little stretch where they got hot, but for the most part we did a really good job.”

The Trojans led 13-12 after one quarter, but exploded in the second stanza to build a 33-17 lead and they were never challenged.

“Offensively, we were really efficient and finished around the rim much better than we had been,” Urban said.

Jake Wadding led the Trojans with 24 points, while Jake Warren added 10 points.

Rounding out the scoring were Nick Mullen (8 points), Travis Grayson (5 points), Drew Vanderwoude (5 points), Jack Eaton (4 points) Kolton Cardenas (3 points), Sean Elliott (2 points), Sam Fender (2 points) and Charlie Eaton (2 points).

A short turnaround didn’t bother the Trojans.

Chesterton built a 15-6 lead after one quarter and held on for a 54-49 non-conference victory over No. 5 Munster on Saturday night.

“I thought our guys really did a nice job of attacking their zone and were able to find some good looks and hit them,” Urban said. “We shot the ball really well in the first half.”

The Trojans knocked down eight 3-pointers on the night, including four from Cardenas and two from Jack Eaton.

Wadding led the Trojans with 21 points, while Cardenas added 14 points.

Rounding out the scoring were Jack Eaton (6 points), Mullen (5 points), Vanderwoude (4 points), Grayson (2 points) and Warren (2 points).

“Our concentration level was really high and against a team that is that disciplined on both ends of the floor, you have to be,” Urban said.
