Boone Grove opened Friday night’s game with the first basket and never were in the game again.

The Chesterton boys basketball team went on a 15-2 tear in the first quarter and cruised to a 64-22 regular season ending win.

“I thought our kids did a really good job in their approach to the game tonight,” Chesterton head coach Marc Urban said. “We did some good things and we had a mature approach for 32 minutes.”

The Trojans continued with a 12-3 run to open the second quarter and the lead grew to 27-8. Chesterton held Boone Grove to just seven baskets on the night.

“I’m excited because I think things are really starting to click with our guys individually and collectively,” Urban said. “I think our best basketball is ahead of us.”

The Trojans were led in scoring by Jake Wadding with 16 points, while Harley Lohmeyer added 10 points. Ky Palombizio scored nine points and Brayden Cortwright tallied seven points.

“We’re going to need a ton of support on Wednesday because the Sectional is a tough grind,” Urban said. “I know we’ll be ready to go though.”

CHS will open Sectional play on Wednesday night when they play Portage at 7:30 p.m. in Michigan City.

“Portage is a lot better than their record. The Galindo kid is electric and we’ll have to do a great job of limiting his looks,” Urban said. “We’ll have to play to our strengths. We’ll have an advantage down low that we have to take control of. In the Sectional, it’s a possession by possession game. That’s something we’ve been trying to teach them all year.”
