Once the ball
started going in, it was no contest.
The Chesterton boys
basketball team blew open a 21-19 halftime lead and rolled to a 58-44
Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Lake Central on Friday night.
“We have to be good
defensively. We aren’t going to score 95 points a game,” Chesterton coach
Marc Urban said. “We have guys that are starting to grow up and
understanding what we are trying to do defensively and then finishing it off
with a rebound.”
The Trojans held LC
to just 28 percent shooting through the first three quarters, including a
2-for-11 (19 percent) outing in the third quarter where they outscored the
Indians 21-6.
“I felt like we did
a good job of locking in on the scouting report. They run a lot of stuff and
they are really good at it,” Urban said. “And we made some layups finally.
We missed a lot at the rim early. We had some guys step up and make some
shots for us.”
Kolton Cardenas and
Tyler Nelson hit triples ahead of a Jack Eaton conventional three-point play
during an 11-1 run to start the second half. The Trojans were 7-of-11 from
3-point range.
“Their zone bottled
us up on the inside some,” Urban said. “We have unselfish job guys and we
knew if we got some paint touches we could kick it out for open 3’s. We
shoot the ball well when that happens.”
Jake Wadding led
the Trojans with 12 points, while Eaton added nine points and Drew
Vanderwoude had eight points.
Rounding out the
scoring were Cardenas (6 points), Nelson (6 points), Alex Schmidt (5
points), Travis Grayson (4 points), Jake Warren (4 points) and Sean Elliott
(3 points).
“Anytime the
scoring is spread out, it just makes us harder to guard,” Urban said. “We
have a guy (Wadding) who is capable of scoring 40 a night, but he doesn’t
have to.”
