Back To Front Page

The Chesterton baseball team opened its season with a 5-0 shutout victory over Hammond Gavit on Monday night.

The Trojans put the first run of the game on the board in the very first inning as Tommy Benson drew a one-out walk and stole second. Austin Petersonís single to center field put runners on the corners.

Brett Roeskeís sacrifice fly to center scored Benson for a 1-0 lead.

The lead grew to 2-0 in the second inning as Logan Lawson led things off with a double. A misplayed pop fly behind second base off the bat of Steve Gilbertsen plated Lawson.

Things remained that way until the sixth when Kolton Cardenas started a rally with a one-out double. Patrick Sosby reached on an error and Tyler Nelson singled to score Cardenas.

Sosby and Nelson would score on Bensonís RBI double to set the final score.

On the mound, Brayden Cortwright picked up the win by working the first three innings, allowing three hits and striking out three. Chris Torres worked three innings and struck out six without allowing a hit.

Chad Dzierba threw the final inning and struck out one.

The Trojans open Duneland Athletic Conference play tonight as they host Crown Point beginning at 4:30 p.m.
