Back To Front Page

It took a little while to get the bats going, but the Chesterton baseball team did and cruised to a 10-0 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Merrillville on Tuesday.

The Trojans broke onto the scoreboard in the fourth as Tommy Benson drew a leadoff walk. After reaching second on a balk, Benson scored the game’s first run on an RBI single from Austin Peterson.

Courtesy runner Tyler Nelson stole second and went to third on a passed ball during an at bat where Grant Brunt was hit by a pitch. Chris Torres’ single scored Nelson.

After a ground out put runners on second and third, Brett Roeske plated both with a double. Logan Lawson’s follow-up double scored courtesy runner Jeremy Krantz.

Kolton Cardenas’s RBI double scored Lawson for a 6-0 Trojan lead.

The final touches to the game came in the fifth as Peterson drew a leadoff walk. Nelson, a courtesy runner, stole second with one out before Torres was hit by a pitch.

Chris VanEekeren tripled to center field scoring Nelson and Torres. Roeske singled to plate VanEekeren.

The game ended as Cardenas reached on an error that scored Roeske.

Peterson worked all five innings on the mound and allowed just one hit and struck out 10.

The Trojans return to the field tonight when they travel to Merrillville for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.
