The Chesterton baseball team scored three early runs and held on for a 3-2 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Valparaiso on Wednesday.

The Trojans are now 12-4 overall and have won eight straight games.

“Good ballgame,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “We keep finding ways to win. There’s something to be said for a team having great chemistry and this group has that.”

Andrew Ralph led off the first with a single to center field and Jordan Morandini’s sacrifice bunt moved Ralph to second. A walk to Aery Pratt was followed by Austin VanderZanden’s RBI single for a 1-0 lead.

The early scoring continued in the second when Tyler Sufana led off with a triple. Mitch Kobitz’s ground ball score Sufana.

With two outs, Michael Griffin walked and Ralph’s double plated him for a 3-0 lead.

“We got a couple of big hits early on to score some runs,” Campbell said. “We’ve been doing that a lot lately. We still left some guys on base, but we did enough.”

The Vikings scored solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings and threatened in the seventh against Trojan reliever Kobitz. A single and a pair of walks loaded the bases with two outs, but Kobitz got a strike out to end the game.

Ralph led the offense with two hits and an RBI, while Sufana and VanderZanden each tallied hits. Pratt reached base twice as well on walks.

Matt Kubacki got the win for Chesterton after working 4 1/3 innings and striking out two, while scattering three hits. Kobitz worked 2 1/3 innings with one strike out to earn the save.
