The Lake Central Indians always seem to play well at home and Monday was no
different as the host school hit two home runs and a couple more extra base
hits in picking up a 10-4 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over
Chesterton.
“Even though there were a lot of errors (11 combined), three of ours just
came on pickoff moves to first base,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said.
“They only stole one base off of us. If you’re going to throw over there it
has to be to hold them on.
“Being young, you have to understand where we are and what’s the score. We
made some bad decisions.”
The Indians (14-3, 8-3) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first off of
Chesterton starter Steve Janes. The Trojans took advantage of four Lake
Central errors in the second inning, but only scored one run to tie the game.
“(LC pitcher Eric) Summers did a good job,” Campbell said. “We hit some balls
hard and it just went right at them. Sometimes that just happens in
baseball.”
Lake Central took the lead for good in the third inning on a Ryan Boss’
three-run home run. Five more runs in the fourth thanks in part to a Frank
Pluskota homer pushed the lead to 9-1.
“It’s hard to defend the home run,” Campbell said.
Chesterton (11-4, 7-3) tried to battle back as Zack Novak scored on a Jeremy
Ross double in the sixth inning. Ross scored on De’Andre Dukes RBI ground
out.
The Trojans return to the field tonight as they host Merrillville in a DAC
game beginning at 4:30 p.m.
