CHS Baseball blasts Portage 14-2

Back To Front Page

The Chesterton baseball team pounded out 13 hits and pushed nine runs across the plate in the fifth inning to pick up a 14-2 Duneland Athletic Conference win at Portage on Tuesday.

The Trojans jumped on top in the first as Tyler Nelson singled and scored on a triple by Zach McKenna. Jake Roof’s RBI single plated McKenna for a 2-0 lead.

Things would remain that way into the fifth when the Trojan bats got hot.

Garrett Fairbanks started the rally when he reached on an error and moved all the way to third when Connor Krantz recorded a bunt single and a throwing error pushed him to second. Jeremy Krantz singled to plate both runners.

McKenna singled and Roof walked to load the bases before Kolton Cardenas singled to score Krantz. Zach Zimmerman drew a bases loaded walk to score McKenna as did Aidan Turner to plate pinch-runner David Mahaffey.

Fairbanks’ fly ball was misplayed in the outfield allowing Cardenas to score. Connor Krantz drew a walk to plate Zimmerman and Jeremy Krantz also drew a walk to score Turner.

The final run of the rally came as Fairbanks scored on an errant throw to push the Trojans’ lead to 11-0.

Portage rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Chesterton tallied three more in the seventh to set the final score.

Zach Westphal singled to start the inning and scored all the way from first on Max Weller’s single to right. After Gunner Burkhart reached on an error, Danny Anderson singled to center to score Weller.

Ryan Slivka’s sacrifice fly plated Burkhart with the game’s final tally.

McKenna led the Trojan offense with three hits and Tyler Nelson added two. Anderson, Roof, Haydn Malackowski, Cardenas and Westphal all added singles.

Ben Collins worked the first four innings on the mound and struck out eight in getting the victory. Turner went 2 2/3 innings of relief and struck out four before Chad Dzierba got the game’s final out.

Chesterton returns to the field tonight when they host Portage with the first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
