Offense, offense, offense.

The Chesterton baseball team took their bats to Merrillville on Thursday and used them early and often in getting a 19-8 Duneland Athletic Conference decision over the Pirates.

The Trojans got going immediately with four runs in the first. Owen Hallas started things with a single and stole second and third. He was thrown out on a fly ball off the bat of Jack Mullen.

Patrick Arndt proceeded to walk and Matt Kubacki doubled to plate Arndt. Anthony Kurek walked and Travis Brooks reached on an error that scored Kubacki. Cameron O’Brien’s single scored Kurek and Brooks for a 4-0 lead.

The Pirates didn’t waste any time either as they used seven hits and scored seven runs in the bottom of the first for a 7-4 lead.

The score stayed that way until the third when Kubacki and Kurek started the frame with back-to-back singles for Chesterton. After a sacrifice bunt, O’Brien drew a walk to load the bases.

Max Benoit singled to score Kubacki and Kurek. O’Brien would later score on an error and Ben Thornton’s RBI single plated Benoit for an 8-7 lead.

The Trojans scored three more runs in the fifth as Benoit started the rally by reaching on an error. Thornton drew a walk and Hallas singled to load the bases. Mullen took a walk scoring courtesy runner James Burger.

Arndt hit a sacrifice fly that scored Thornton and Hallas before Kubacki reached on an error to make the score 11-7.

Benoit reached on an error to get things started before Hallas and Mullen both walked. Arndt singled to left scoring courtesy runner Isaac Shook and Hallas. Kurek’s single plated Mullen and Arndt to make the score 15-8.

The Trojans put the final touches on in the seventh as O’Brien singled to start another rally. Garrett Swanson doubled to score O’Brien before Michael Jacobucci walked and Zach Burris was hit by a pitch. Arndt’s sacrifice fly plated Swanson.

Shook singled to plate Burris and Burger followed that with a single to set the final score.
