The Chesterton boys baseball team ran its winning streak to nine with a 5-3
Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Merrillville on Monday.
The Trojans jumped on top early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the
second inning. Tyler Sufana singled with one out, promptly stole second and
moved to third on a passed ball. Corey Rusboldt’s single plated Sufana.
Rusboldt stole to second and moved to third on an error before scoring on an
RBI ground out by Mitch Kobitz.
The Trojans pushed the lead to 3-0 when Sufana tripled with one out in the
fourth and scored on Rusboldt’s single.
Merrillville rallied against Chesterton starter Mitch Kobitz for three runs
in the fifth (two earned) to tie the game. Kobitz worked five innings for
the Trojans in garnering the win.
CHS responded immediately in its half of the fifth as Andrew Ralph walked to
start the inning. After stealing second and moving to third on an error,
Ralph scored on a one-out single by Aery Pratt. Austin VanderZanden’s single
to center field moved pinch-runner Jeremy Jaeger all the way to third.
Jaeger scored on Mike Crowley’s sacrifice fly to set the final score.
Matt Kubacki picked up the save for the Trojans as he worked the final two
Offensively, Rusboldt was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI’s, while Pratt and
Sufana each had two hits. Ralph and VanderZanden each had a hit.
