CHS Baseball beats Merrillville 9-4

Back To Front Page

The Chesterton baseball team scored six runs in the sixth inning and got five innings of shut down pitching from Jack Mullen in picking up a 9-4 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Merrillville on Thursday.

The Pirates jumped on top with three runs in the first as Trojan starter Mike Mallon struggled with his control.

Merrillville pushed the lead to 4-0 with a solo run in the third before the Trojans got on the board in the bottom of the inning.

Owen Hallas and Ethan Conway started the inning by drawing back-to-back walks. Hallas scored Chesterton’s first run on an Anthony Kurek ground out.

In the fourth, the Trojans scored another run as Brett Roeske reached on an error. Jack Mullen singled to put runners on the corners and Erik Ralph’s fielder’s choice plated Roeske.

The slow climb back into the game continued in the fifth when Austin Peterson singled with one out and moved all the way to third on a pair of passed balls. Patrick Arndt’s ground out scored Peterson to cut the lead to 4-3.

Chesterton finally exploded offensively in the sixth as Mullen singled with one out. Ralph reached on an error and Hallas singled to load the bases.

Conway grounded out to short, but scored Mullen to tie the game. Kurek’s single to center plated Ralph and Hallas, just ahead of Peterson scoring Kurek with an RBI single.

After Arndt drew a walk, Blake Soffa doubled to score Peterson and Arndt to set the final score.

Offensively, Kurek, Peterson and Mullen each had two hits to lead the Trojans. Mullen got the win with five innings of relief work, allowing just two hits and striking out six.
