The Chesterton baseball split a split doubleheader, dropping the important
one and winning the “marque” game.
The Trojans fell 5-0 in Duneland Athletic Conference play in a rescheduled
tilt on Saturday morning at LaPorte, but rebounded to beat Griffith later
that afternoon 3-2 at RailCats Stadium in Gary.
In the morning, Slicer starter Connor Podkul kept the Trojans at bay as he
allowed just four hits and struck out 11 in getting the win.
LaPorte scored a solo run in the first and then added three more in the
fifth against Chesterton starter Jordan Peterson who struck out six in the
Offensively, Alex Olson led the Trojans with two hits.
In the afternoon, Chesterton scored a solo run in the bottom of the seventh
to pick up the win.
Pinch-hitter Zach Hise started the frame with a single just before Bobby
Humphreys put down a sacrifice bunt that moved pinch-runner Josh Jaeger into
scoring position. Nate Majcher ripped the first pitch from Griffith starter
Calvin Bonewitz into left-center field for the game-winner.
The Panthers built a 2-0 lead early against Chesterton starter Alex Olson
who allowed just four hits and struck out four in five innings of work.
The Trojans tied the game with an RBI double in the first inning by Jordan
Peterson and a fourth-inning RBI single for Zach Rochowiak in the fourth.
Humphreys worked the final two innings on the mound for Chesterton to get
the win as he allowed just one hit and struck out one.
