The Chesterton baseball team ran its winning streak to 12 straight and took control of the race for the Duneland Athletic Conference regular season title Monday.

The Trojans plated a run without a hit in the sixth and withstood a Crown Point rally in the seventh for a 4-3 win over the Bulldogs.

Chesterton is 11-1 in DAC play with a one-game lead and two games remaining. The Trojans travel to Merrillville today and hosts Lake Central on Thursday. Both games are scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a Jake Jatis solo home run, but the Trojans answered with three runs in the top of the third.

Corey Rusboldt started the frame with a walk and moved to second on a Mitch Kobitz sacrifice bunt. Michael Griffin’s single to center field plated Rusboldt.

After a strike out, Jordan Morandini doubled to left field scoring Griffin. Aery Pratt’s single to left scored Morandini for a 3-1 lead.

Crown Point tied the game with two runs in the fourth thanks in part to a Trojan error.

Things remained that way until the sixth when Pratt drew a leadoff walk. Austin VanderZanden reached on an error that moved pinch-runner Jeremy Jaeger all the way to third.

Mike Crowley’s ground ball to second scored Jaeger for a 4-3 lead.

The Bulldogs got a leadoff single before Pratt, the Chesterton starter, recorded a strike out. A single by Alex Nickla put runners on first and second and brought Kobitz on in relief of Pratt.

Glenn Hecht’s fly ball to right field was misplayed to load the bases for Zach Plesac. Plesac hit a line drive on a 1-2 pitch headed for center field, but Rusboldt was there to catch it and step on second base ahead of Nickla for a game-ending double play.

Offensively, Morandini, Pratt, Crowley and Griffin all recorded hits for the Trojans. Pratt earned the win after scattering eight hits and striking out four. Kobitz threw six pitches, but recorded the save.
