He logged the miles and didn’t mind one bit.

Chesterton High School Athletic Director Garry Nallenweg witnessed both titles Saturday as the Trojans started the day with an IHSAA Gymnastics Regional title at Valparaiso High.

Then Nallenweg saw the Boys Basketball team snap a 32-year drought and win the IHSAA Sectional title over Valparaiso at Portage.

“Our student-athletes are ambassadors who represent the Duneland Community and CHS well,” Nallenweg said. “What a great problem we have now. We have basketball in the Regional and Gymnastics competing for a State Championship on Saturday.”

The top-ranked Gymnastics team cruised to its title with a 114.45 team score and will look for back-to-back State Championships at Noblesville High School.

“They’ve had a target on their back all year and they continue to perform and get better,” Nallenweg said. “The coaching staff has done a great job of keeping them focused and the girls have worked hard. All you want is a chance and they’ve got it.”

The Boys Basketball team was a far more uncertain result after losing 67-39 to Valpo on February. 15.

“This is Indiana High School Basketball at its finest tonight,” Nallenweg said. “A sold out gym with a line outside the door. I’m so happy that our kids got to experience it.”

The Trojans beat the Vikings 35-30 in a defensive slugfest and will face Penn at 10 a.m. in Michigan City on Saturday.

“These are kids that grew up in Chesterton and they stayed here and won,” Nallenweg said. “That’s what makes me the most proud. This is a group of kids that grew up playing here, developed their game and here they are. Fantastic.

“Look at the number of little kids that are here tonight on this court getting autographs and celebrating with the team. That’s how I felt in ’68 when that team won.”

The Trojans have brought home IHSAA Sectional Championship in five sports during the winter season, including boys and girls swimming, wrestling, gymnastics and boys basketball.
