Jack Tolin took
little time in setting the tone Friday.
junior took down Avon’s Nathan Conley in the first period for a 2-0 lead and
earned his way to medal competition on Saturday at the IHSAA State Finals at
Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Tolin added another
takedown and back points in the third period for an 8-2 victory.
“Jack came in with
the approach he has used all year, take it one match at a time,” Chesterton
coach Chris Joll said. “He did not get ahead of himself, did not panic and
took what was given him.”
Tolin was joined on
Friday by teammates Diego Lemley and Andrew Davison, but neither was able to
secure a victory.
Lemley fell 5-4 to
Adams Central’s Hunter Bates after fighting to a 2-2 tie after one period.
Bates scored an escape and takedown for a 5-2 lead, but Lemley escaped just
before the end of the period.
Another escape to
start the third period for Lemley brought him within 5-4, but he couldn’t
get the match-winning takedown.
“For a sophomore to
qualify for State is a big accomplishment,” Joll said. “The way he did it
battling an injury (broken hand) is impressive. He ran into a kid that was
just as big and physical as he is. Our offense was clearly hampered.”
entered the match 38-0, dropped a 3-1 decision in overtime to Hamilton
Southeastern’s Spencer Irick.
No one scored in
the opening period and both wrestlers got an escape to finish regulation
tied at 1-1. Irick’s takedown 18 seconds into overtime ended Davison’s
“It’s really hard
to come down here and have a big target on your back,” Joll said. “That kid
had a plan and all the pressure was on us. For the amount of work you put
in, to have it end like that, you just wish it would’ve ended differently.”
On Saturday, Tolin
opened his day against eventual four-time State Champion Chad Red of New
Palestine and dropped a 15-0 tech fall decision. Red finished his career
Tolin followed that
with a victory over Homestead’s Drake Rhodes 8-6 in overtime before falling
in the fifth place match to New Haven’s Owen Doster 5-1.
“At the end of the
day, sixth place was not where Jack would have liked to end up, but in the
unpredictable world that is the IHSAA State Wrestling Finals, it was not
without satisfaction. He won two very nice matches.”
Joll believes all
three Trojans’, along with several other teammates, have a prime chance to
increase the Chesterton contingency at the State Finals next year.
“The three of them
will be back on the mat next year, and along with a few of their teammates,
we expect to make that Friday drive to Indy again,” Joll said. “With the
experience of this meet under their belt and 51 weeks of training, they will
