Finally, the IHSAA Regional trophy is changing location.

The Chesterton wrestling team snapped the 10-year title streak of the host Bulldogs and left Crown Point with the IHSAA Regional title on Saturday.

The Trojans racked up 240 points to outdistance runner-up Crown Point (178). Lowell (72), Wheeler (67) and LaPorte (60) rounded out the top five.

“Last Saturday’s (Sectional) was a nice set up for this Saturday,” Chesterton coach Chris Joll said.

The team title may have been decided in the meet’s first hour as the Trojans went 14-for-14 in the first round with 13 victories by fall.

“Drawing third and fourth place finishers from the other Sectionals as our first round matches gave us the opportunity not just win all 14, but to get bonus points,” Joll said. “I told them they would earn six points for winning their first round match, but a pin would get them eight.

“I didn’t think they would get that carried away with it.”

The first round sweep also means that all 14 Trojans will advance to next Saturday’s IHSAA Semistate at East Chicago Central.

“Qualifying all 14 for Semistate was a secondary thought for them,” Joll said.

The Trojans won 10 of their 14 semifinals and finished with five individual champions.

“That was the beginning of a lot of firsts for the day,” Joll said. “We put 10 in the Finals. Four were freshmen, five were champs, including two of those freshmen in atypical weight classes.”

Chesterton’s first title came at 145 pounds as rookie Brock Ellis beat Lake Central’s Daniel Park, 6-3.

“Besides his opening fall, Brock racked up two nice grinder decisions against tough DAC opponents,” Joll said.

Evan Bates made it two freshmen titles with his pin of Wheeler’s Marc Buehler in 1:17 at 170 pounds.

“Evan just had an exceptional day,” Joll said. “Not only did he win his first match by fall, but he won his next two rounds by pinning opponents that he had lost to earlier in the season.”

Senior Cade Girgenti took the title at 182 pounds with a fall win over Crown Point’s Ethan Potosky (4:49). Classmate Lucas Davison remained undefeated with a pin of Hebron’s Ewen Donovan (1:16) for the 195 pound title.

“Cade and Lucas were both able to repeat as Regional champs,” Joll said. “They kept doing what they have been doing since late December, winning and getting falls.”

The final title went to junior Eli Pokorney with a 17-1 tech fall win over Crown Point’s Michael Foster at 285 pounds.

“Eli's got his first Regional title in dominating fashion,” Joll said. “He did not have the pressure he had last year in the finals in that the team race was over when it got to his match. He got to have some fun and put some points on the board instead of rushing a fall.”

Joll and his squad may have enjoyed the title over the weekend, but Monday, it’s back to work.

“The celebration is brief,” Joll said. “Our Semistate draws are in and they will be back to work on Monday intent on advancing to State.”
