Chesterton wrestling coach Chris Joll will be more than happy to designate an assistant coach to drive another vehicle to East Chicago on Saturday.

“That’s two SPV’s we’ll have to take,” Joll said. “We judge our success on how many vehicles we have to take to the next tournament.”

The Trojans managed to pick up four individual IHSAA Regional Championships on Saturday at Crown Point and finished second overall as a team.

Crown Point won the team title with 192.5 points, while the Trojans were runner-up with 170. Lowell finished third with 100 points.

“We didn’t meet the expectations we wanted,” Joll said. “The competition was stronger than last week, but we got 10 kids through to Semistate. We’re wrestling better. Our inexperience at a couple of weights showed through, but I don’t know that we’ve ever taken 10 guys to Semistate before. Eight of those kids are underclassmen.”

The first individual title came at 126 pounds as Steve Biancardi beat Kankakee Valley’s Bryce Niewoehner 11-4.

“Steve stuck to a plan and beat a kid that’s had a lot of success this year,” Joll said. “He was a little taller and stronger than us, but Steve did what he does and put kids on their back.”

Jack Tolin earned the next title with a pin of KV’s Denver Smith at 132 pounds.

“Jack took people down and pinned them,” Joll said. “You know the day is going good for Jack when he works for a cradle and gets it. He did that twice today.”

Diego Lemley was the third champion of the day at 152 pounds with his 5-2 win over Lowell’s Lucas Scott.

“Diego had to beat a guy that had beat him before,” Joll said. “Then he had to beat a guy in the Finals that is really difficult to wrestle.”

Andrew Davison continued his undefeated run through the season with an 18-1 win over Lowell’s Ike James.

“Andrew didn’t look great in his second round match, but in the Finals he really put the hammer down,” Joll said. “That kids a two-time All-State linebacker and Andrew just out-toughed him.”

The Trojans also picked up three runner-up finishes through the efforts of Cade Girgenti (145 pounds), Lucas Davison (195 pounds) and Danny Cutter (285 pounds).

“We’ve been working at this for a long time,” Joll said. “We’ve got the right group of kids coming through at the right time that have worked really hard.”

Other Chesterton wrestlers heading to Saturday’s Semistate at East Chicago Central include Dan Mochen (3rd, 220 pounds), Troy Johnson (4th, 138 pounds) and Eli Pokorney (4th, 170 pounds).

“We’re not surprised with the success we’ve had, but we’re not satisfied with it either,” Joll said. “We want to keep as many guys going for the next two weeks as possible.”
