The Chesterton wrestling team advanced six wrestlers to Day 2 of the prestigious Al Smith Invitational at Mishawaka over the weekend and finished eighth in the 32-team field.

“I was very happy with getting six guys to the second day,” Chesterton coach Chris Joll said. “We are all getting better. We went through a really bad rash of illnesses the last couple of weeks. Now we head to ‘undefeated’ January and see where we are at.

“It was nice to see a lot of individuals wrestle well and get us excited about our possibilities in the post-season.”

Alex Katsafaros was the top place winner for the Trojans with a runner-up finish at 170 pounds.

“Alex was able to beat some people up with takedowns,” Joll said. “In the semifinals he beat a good kid from Warren Central and in the finals he just didn’t do much. He worked really hard all weekend.”

Sawyer Hallas took third for the Trojans at 160 pounds.

“Sawyer got third by beating a good Jasper kid because his motor is so good,” Joll said. “He keeps going for six minutes and is physically strong enough to dominate kids on top.”

Jaycee Jensen finished fourth at 182 pounds.

“Jaycee was beating a couple of kids and got pinned,” Joll said. “He’s got to learn how to finish matches when he’s ahead. He got fourth and had a great tournament to springboard off of.”

Jack Tolin finished fifth at 106 pounds.

“He took care of business on Friday and only spent about four minutes on the mat,” Joll said. “He had a good day on Saturday as well, but woke up a little bit to the competition level he can wrestle at. He’s got a list of things he wants to work on and we will.”

Mike Double took the long way through the tournament to a sixth place finish at 132 pounds after losing his opening match.

“Mike Double lost his first match and battled all the way back to get there,” Joll said. “He showed a lot of heart and will power to get through all that mess. He battled through some overtimes and some sudden death matches, but kept on working.”

Connor Smith finished seventh at 220 pounds.

“Connos had to wrestle (defending state champ) Gelen Robinson (of Lake Central) after pinning the No. 8 seed,” Joll said. “(Gelen) pinned him in the first round last time and when we got to the third round, Connor was just really excited about the way he was wrestling. He just sticks with it every match.

“He doesn’t ever seem to get tired and just keeps working. It was good for him and he just keeps getting better.”

The Trojans also got solid weekends from Danny Cutter at 195 pounds, Luke Zelenika at 145 pounds and Greg Mochen at 152 pounds.

“Danny Cutter was two points away from getting to day two,” Joll said. “Luke had two falls for us and Greg had two major decisions to score team points for us.”
