Chesterton Volleyball wins 3

The Chesterton volleyball team opened its 2020 season with three victories at the season-opening Crown Point Invitational on Saturday.

The Trojans picked up wins over Warsaw (25-22, 26-24), Kouts (24-26, 26-19, 15-11) and Illiana Christian (25-9, 19-25, 15-11). Their lone loss came to Brownsburg (18-25, 25-21, 15-7).

“We had a great start to the season,” Chesterton coach Amber McCaw said. “We recognize our strengths, but also our opportunities for growth are apparent. We are looking forward to a great season.”

Offensively, Meghan Gaffigan led Chesterton with 50 kills, while Katie Nelson added 26. Emma Ekblaw tallied 14 kills and Maggie Vrahoretis had 13.

Vrahoretis also dished out a team best 82 assists.

Defensively, Nelson led the way with 29 digs with Ella Rodriguez (25), Gaffigan (21) and Vrahoretis (20) following. Eve Everett recorded 19 digs in her debut.

On the service line, Vrahoretis had a team-high eight aces, while Everett (6), Gaffigan (5) and Greta Tilden (5) also contributed.

At the net, Reese Czarniak had 12 blocks with Rodriguez (8), Gaffigan (7) and Ekblaw (6) also helping.

Chesterton makes their home debut on Tuesday when they host Michgian City Marquette. The JV is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
