After waiting nearly 24 hours, the Chesterton softball team wasted little time.

The Trojans took a 2-0 lead immediately on Tuesday night en route to an 8-0 victory in the completion of their IHSAA Sectional opening round game against Michigan City at LaPorte.

“It was important to score right away,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “We had to win that inning. We didn’t know if they would pitch to Sydney (Cooley) and they didn’t the rest of the night.”

When the rain and lightning came on Monday, Bailey Slivka was on third base and Jill Bohnert was at second with no outs.

Cooley lined a pitch into center field to plate both as the game resumed. A sacrifice bunt by Lisette Martinez and single by Sierra LaFreniere put runners on the corners. Allena McElfresh’s RBI ground out made the score 3-0.

“We didn’t lump a lot of hits together, but we’re ok with getting a couple of runs at a time,” Hopson said.

A solo home run by Bailey Slivka in the third pushed the lead to 4-0 and two more runs in the fourth scored on a double by Mallory McKee.

Bohnert’s solo home run started the fifth and courtesy runner Shelby Price scored on a double by Sierra LaFreniere in the seventh to set the final score.

Cooley scattered just five hits and struck out six in going the distance in the circle for the Trojans.

“Sydney did a nice job of getting herself out of some potential trouble tonight,” Hopson said. “They hit a couple of balls hard, but our defense played pretty solid behind her.”

The Trojans will face Crown Point tonight at 7 p.m. in the semifinals at LaPorte. Portage and Valparaiso will face off at 5 p.m. in the other semifinal.

“I think it was important to play well to start the tournament,” Hopson said. “I don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring, but we told the kids we are only worrying about one pitch, one inning at a time.”
