The Chesterton softball team improved to 21-6 on the year with a 6-4 non-conference win at Lowell on Thursday night.

The Trojans got the bats going early as they pushed three runs across in the top of the first. Shelby Grimm singled and stole second to get things going. She scored on Cassidy Grimmís sacrifice fly.

A double by Kari LaFreniere and a walk to Maddie Snemis led to a two-run double by Hailey Johansen.

Lowell responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning and two more in the third for a 4-3 lead.

The Trojans took the lead for good in the fifth as Shelby Grimm and Maddie Snemis both singled to start the inning. A walk to Lauren Anderson loaded the bases and Grimm scored when LaFreniere reached on an error.

LaFreniere would get herself caught in a rundown later in the inning allowing Snemis to score from third for a 5-4 lead.

An insurance run for Chesterton came in the seventh when Cassidy Grimm doubled with two outs. Anderson scored Grimm with an RBI single to set the final score.

Anderson picked up the win for the Trojans with 4 2/3 innings of relief work and struck out seven. Lexi Benko got the start and worked the first 2 1/3 innings with two strikeouts.

The Trojans return to the field tonight when they travel to Munster for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.
